Celebrating Pride Month: Honoring John Burnside's Legacy of Innovation

With June 1st marking the start of Pride Month, we explore the remarkable journey of optical engineer John Burnside and his contributions to science, activism, and LGBTQ+ rights.

John Burnside: A Journey of Service and Innovation

John Burnside's journey began in Seattle in 1916. An only child, Burnside joinedPortrait of John Burnside the U.S. Navy at a young age, serving his country with dedication. After his discharge, he pursued higher education at UCLA, where he concentrated on mathematics and physics. It was during this time that Burnside's fascination with optical engineering ignited, leading him to secure a wartime position in the aircraft industry. Eventually, he ascended to the role of staff scientist at Lockheed, one of the top defense and aerospace companies in the world.

The Spark of Innovation

Burnside's keen interest in optics blossomed into groundbreaking discoveries. In 1958, he patented the teleidoscope, a remarkable variation of the traditional kaleidoscope. Unlike its predecessors, Burnside's invention didn't rely on glass chips to create mesmerizing patterns. This innovative device captivated imaginations and earned Burnside recognition as a pioneer in optical engineering. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish California Kaleidoscopes, where his creations found homes in stores nationwide.

A Courageous Advocate for Equality

In 1963, he found himself at a crossroads when he encountered the burgeoning gay rights movement. Inspired by the activism of his peers, Burnside became a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. His partnership with Harry Hay, a prominent figure in the movement, propelled them into the forefront of early LGBTQ+ activism. Together, they co-founded organizations and participated in historic protests, leaving an indelible mark on the fight for equality.
